WHAT P0340 MEANS

P0340 means the Frontier ECM lost or rejected the Bank 1 cam-position signal; it does not prove the sensor failed. Identify the correct KA, VG, QR or VQ circuit, inspect harness routing, load-test power, ground and signal, then scope cam against crank. Missing/noisy edges favor sensor, connector or wiring. Clean signals with stable phase error plus P0011 or timing noise favor oil-control, chain or reluctor inspection.

Identify engine and bank before unplugging

Use VIN and the correct ESM connector view. A VQ40DE sensor location or waveform should not be transferred to VQ38DD, QR25DE or older engines.

Inspect terminals and areas disturbed during valve-cover, clutch, transmission or timing work. Engine movement can pull a marginal harness around brackets.

Load-test the circuit in the fault condition

Verify power and ground under appropriate load and scope signal during crank and idle. Static continuity can pass through a connection that fails hot or under vibration.

Multiple cam/crank codes may share supply or ground. Isolate common wiring before replacing several sensors.

Waveform offset is different from dropout

Missing edges, noise or amplitude loss favor the electrical/sensor path. A repeatable phase displacement between clean signals favors phaser, chain indexing or reluctor position.

Frontier diagnostics span D22, D40 and D41 trucks with KA24DE, VG33E, QR25DE, VQ40DE and VQ38DD engines, rear- or four-wheel drive, and manual or conventional automatic transmissions. North American Frontier did not use the Nissan CVT step-motor system associated with P1778. Confirm VIN, engine, transmission, drivetrain and ECM calibration before applying any code definition or bulletin.
