WHAT P0011 MEANS

P0011 means the Frontier Bank 1 intake cam remained more advanced than commanded or failed timing-control performance. Verify oil level, grade, filter and pressure; save desired/actual cam angle; test the intake timing solenoid and circuit; then scope cam against crank. On VQ engines, compare banks under the same condition. A restricted passage, phaser, chain or feedback fault can imitate a failed solenoid.

Use Bank 2 as a V6 comparison

Save desired and actual intake angle for both VQ banks through idle and controlled rpm. One-bank lag or over-advance narrows local solenoid, oil passage, phaser or feedback faults.

An inline-four has no Bank 2 control. Use the exact engine’s known-good data instead of inventing a second-bank comparison.

Test lubrication and circuit before the phaser

Verify oil specification, level, filter and mechanical pressure, then test solenoid current and command response. Towing history may expose hot-oil behavior, but do not reproduce high load when pressure or noise is unsafe.

Inspect screens and passages according to the ESM. Debris can indicate a larger lubrication problem rather than an isolated dirty valve.

Scope cam/crank feedback before mechanical work

Resolve P0340/P0335 dropouts first. Clean signals with a stable phase offset and rattle move timing-chain or phaser inspection higher.

Perform required learning and verify actual angle tracks command with no pending P0011 under the original condition.

Why the model year changes the test

Frontier diagnostics span D22, D40 and D41 trucks with KA24DE, VG33E, QR25DE, VQ40DE and VQ38DD engines, rear- or four-wheel drive, and manual or conventional automatic transmissions. North American Frontier did not use the Nissan CVT step-motor system associated with P1778. Confirm VIN, engine, transmission, drivetrain and ECM calibration before applying any code definition or bulletin.

  • QR25DE has one bank; VQ40DE/VQ38DD bank location must be verified.
  • VQ38DD control and fuel hardware differs from VQ40DE.
  • Low/wrong oil or sludge changes hydraulic timing response.
  • Rattle or low oil pressure requires limiting operation.
