Cold-soak data separates sensing from circulation
ECT and intake-air temperature should approach ambient after overnight soak. A large mismatch exists before the thermostat acts and therefore raises sensor or circuit priority.
Check coolant only when cold and inspect recent radiator, pump, hose or engine work. Air pockets can destabilize heater output and warm-up data.
Record load as well as road speed
Graph ECT, speed, engine load, fan command and cabin heat. A thermostat may appear acceptable while towing yet allow temperature to fall during unloaded highway airflow.
Verify fan command and actual operation. An unintended fan can delay warm-up even when the thermostat closes.
Use the engine-correct thermostat and bleed process
QR25DE, VQ40DE and VQ38DD housings and procedures are not interchangeable. Confirm VIN and engine before draining coolant.
Verify stable temperature and heater output in comparable conditions plus no pending P0128. Clearing the code immediately after repair is not confirmation.

Why the model year changes the test
Frontier diagnostics span D22, D40 and D41 trucks with KA24DE, VG33E, QR25DE, VQ40DE and VQ38DD engines, rear- or four-wheel drive, and manual or conventional automatic transmissions. North American Frontier did not use the Nissan CVT step-motor system associated with P1778. Confirm VIN, engine, transmission, drivetrain and ECM calibration before applying any code definition or bulletin.
- Frontier I4 and V6 cooling layouts differ.
- Towing load adds heat while highway airflow removes it.
