In a stock 2001–2004 light-duty LB7 Duramax, the engine-mounted high-pressure pump draws fuel from the tank through the chassis supply line and filter-head/water-separator assembly. The LB7 uses common-rail injection, but its low-pressure side behaves differently from many newer diesel pickups. On the stock light-duty truck, the high-pressure pump pulls fuel forward. A hardened filter-head seal, loose bleeder, cracked hose, restriction, or pickup problem can admit air or reduce delivery even when no diesel is visibly dripping.

The high-pressure side begins after the pump compresses the fuel. It splits toward the left and right rails, then reaches each injector through rigid lines. Return fuel from the injectors and pump is no longer at injection pressure and travels back to the tank through the return circuit.

Unlike later trucks equipped with an electric in-tank supply pump, the stock light-duty LB7 commonly operates with suction between the tank and high-pressure pump. Air can enter that side without producing an obvious wet leak. Medium-duty chassis and aftermarket lift-pump conversions must be mapped separately.

Low-pressure supply side

Fuel leaves the tank pickup and travels forward through the chassis line to the engine-compartment filter head. The assembly filters fuel, separates water, provides a hand primer, and includes a bleed point. From the clean outlet, fuel reaches the high-pressure pump inlet.

Because this section is normally under suction on a stock light-duty LB7, an air leak may cause hard starting or loss of prime without leaving a puddle. A vacuum-side restriction can also starve the pump while the filter appears externally dry.

High-pressure common-rail side

The pump raises fuel to commanded rail pressure and feeds the two cylinder-bank rails. The rails act as accumulators and distribute fuel to eight electronically controlled injectors. Pressure control depends on pump metering, rail pressure feedback, injector operation, cranking speed, and adequate low-side filling.

Common-rail fuel can penetrate skin. Do not crack a line to check for fuel, place a hand near a suspected leak, or reuse a damaged sealing surface. Follow GM's depressurization, cleanliness, line-replacement, and torque requirements.

Return and leak-off path

Internal leakage needed for component lubrication and control exits through injector and pump return paths and goes back toward the tank. Excessive return can prevent commanded pressure, but the location cannot be identified by total return alone.

A proper test isolates the component groups using specified containers and adapters. Results are sensitive to fuel temperature, battery/cranking condition, test duration, and whether the engine is cranking or running.

Stock versus lift-pump conversion

  • An added electric lift pump changes the low-side pressure state and priming behavior.
