Record whether the cap was secured before anyone touches it, then command vent closure and monitor the approved pressure tool. If pressure remains stable and purge does not leak, Nissan identifies a previously loose cap as the possible cause.
That no-leak branch says not to replace the cap or another EVAP component. Preserve this decision instead of turning every P0456 into a parts sale.
Confirm the vent seal before using its bulletin
NTB17-082D requires a detected leak exactly where the vent-control valve attaches to the canister and identification of the O-ring as the cause. It is not a blanket vent-valve replacement instruction.
Use regulated EVAP equipment and inspect the smoke location. Road damage, a hose connection, canister seam or top-of-tank seal requires the repair the plume actually supports.
Connection strategy changes on later models
NTB13-097h separates service-port vehicles from 2018-and-newer models without a port. The newer path connects at the purge line and calls for a separate purge-valve leak check.
After repair, allow correct fuel level and soak conditions and confirm no pending P0456. Repeated road testing is not the pressure-test procedure Nissan specifies.

Why the model year changes the test
Rogue diagnostics span S35, T32 and T33 generations with QR25DE, PR25DD, KR15DDT, hybrid and market-specific powertrains, while Rogue Sport is a separate model. EVAP routing, MAF strategy, catalyst layout, valve timing and CVT hardware are not interchangeable. Confirm VIN, production model, engine, drivetrain, CVT code and calibration before applying a test or bulletin.
