WHAT P0420 MEANS

P0420 means the Rogue Bank 1 catalyst did not show the expected oxygen-storage performance. Most four-cylinder Rogues have only Bank 1, but engine and hybrid/turbo configuration still control sensor layout. Repair P0300, P0171, MAF error, injector imbalance, oil consumption and exhaust leakage first. Then graph upstream A/F and downstream O2 response under the correct monitor conditions. A similar waveform does not by itself identify whether the catalyst, sensor or upstream combustion is responsible.

Ask the shop to document three things: the companion-code status, exhaust integrity, and the evidence that Bank 1 sensor behavior fails the VIN-correct catalyst test. A quotation that begins only with 'P0420 means converter' skips the root-cause work that protects the replacement. Review misfire history, fuel trims, oil use and coolant loss before approving an expensive part.

Confirm the proposed converter matches the truck's model year, engine, wheelbase/exhaust configuration and underhood emissions certification. Federal and California-emissions applications may not use the same part. Ask whether new seals, fasteners or sensors are required, what warranty applies, and whether the estimate includes correcting the condition that damaged the original unit.

After repair, verify there are no leaks, rising misfire counts or abnormal trims. Complete the applicable Ford drive cycle so the catalyst monitor can run. A permanent P0420 cannot simply be erased; it clears after the OBD system observes enough passing operation. Keep the invoice and part certification for future emissions inspection or warranty questions.

Resolve upstream evidence before evaluating storage

Save permanent and pending misfire, fuel-trim and airflow codes. A catalyst monitor is interpreting exhaust produced by the engine; it cannot separate a deteriorated substrate from every rich, lean or misfire cause on its own.

Review oil additions, coolant level and plug deposits. Catalyst replacement without correcting fluid entry or injector imbalance invites a repeat failure.

Inspect the close-coupled exhaust cold

Look for soot, ticking, damaged flex sections and loose joints ahead of the rear sensor. Outside oxygen entering through a leak can change the downstream signal and catalyst calculation.

If the Rogue has rattle or power loss, test for substrate damage and restriction using the ESM. Avoid prolonged operation when the converter may be overheating or blocked.

Run the monitor only after prerequisites pass

Graph A/F and rear O2 behavior at the specified temperature and steady load after trims and misfire are stable. The downstream trace should be interpreted with the exact engine's control strategy.

A completed catalyst monitor without pending P0420 is the useful verification. Clearing codes resets readiness and can delay rather than prove the result.

Why the model year changes the test

Rogue diagnostics span S35, T32 and T33 generations with QR25DE, PR25DD, KR15DDT, hybrid and market-specific powertrains, while Rogue Sport is a separate model. EVAP routing, MAF strategy, catalyst layout, valve timing and CVT hardware are not interchangeable. Confirm VIN, production model, engine, drivetrain, CVT code and calibration before applying a test or bulletin.

  • Most Rogue engines are inline units with a single Bank 1, but exhaust and sensor packaging varies.
