P0448 means the Rogue ECM detected an electrical fault in the EVAP vent-control circuit. Inspect the rear canister connector and harness for water, corrosion, impact and chafe; test coil resistance/current and loaded power/driver control; then command the valve and verify airflow. A valve can be electrically healthy but mechanically stuck, while a P0456 companion requires a separate sealing test. Do not use an Altima VQ35DE permanent-DTC bulletin on a Rogue.
Match the symptom
Select the closest observation. The result changes the first test; it does not name a part to replace.
Prioritize vent-control power, ground, coil and harness testing.
What can set P0448—and how to separate it
The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.
| Possible cause | Evidence that supports it | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Vent-control valve coil open/shorted | Resistance/current/function test fails | Valve electrical test |
| Harness or connector short to voltage/ground | Loaded circuit or isolation test fails | Wiring test |
| Corrosion, water or debris at rear connector | Visual/terminal evidence | Connector inspection |
| Valve mechanically stuck or canister contaminated | Command changes electrically but airflow does not | Function and flow test |
| Applicable ECM/permanent-DTC software branch | Exact model/engine/year/part number match | Bulletin applicability |
Rear exposure makes connector evidence valuable
The vent valve sits near the canister and is exposed to water, salt, road debris and underbody work. Inspect terminal color, grip, seals and harness support before measuring through the circuit.
Look for wiring pinched after canister, exhaust, fuel-tank or collision repair. Load-testing is more reliable than a continuity beep through a partially broken strand.
Electrical command and airflow are different tests
Measure coil and driver behavior against the exact ESM, then command the valve with CONSULT. Current or clicking proves electrical activity but not that the passage opens and closes freely.
If P0456 or P0455 is stored, repair P0448 and then perform Nissan's separate EVAP pressure-retention test. A circuit repair does not prove the entire vapor system seals.
Do not import another Nissan model's software path
NTB19-045b lists selected Altima, Rogue Sport and Rogue Hybrid combinations but does not generically list every Rogue P0448. Model identity, engine, year and ECM part number are hard boundaries.
For a standard Rogue outside a named bulletin, follow the ESM circuit and valve tests. Confirm correct command, current, airflow and readiness with no pending P0448.
Save these scan-data clues
Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.
- Exact VIN, platform, model year and engine sales code
- All confirmed, pending and permanent companion codes
- RPM, load, coolant temperature and vehicle speed
- Relevant commanded and actual scan data
- Recent service, repairs and symptom conditions
- Manufacturer bulletin and current software/VIN status
A practical diagnostic workflow
- 01Confirm P0448 status and companions
Circuit and leak codes require related but different tests.
- 02Locate the exact vent-control assembly
Generation and drivetrain routing differs.
- 03Inspect connector and rear harness
Look for water, corrosion, impact and chafe.
- 04Test coil and driver circuit
Use specified resistance/current and loaded voltage tests.
- 05Verify mechanical airflow
An electrically active valve may still stick.
- 06Leak-test if EVAP codes accompany it
Use regulated EVAP equipment.
- 07Check narrow software branches
A reflash may affect permanent-code handling, not repair the original DTC.
Do not replace the most commonly named component from P0448 alone. Confirm the exact engine, preserve evidence and complete the manufacturer test sequence before ordering parts.
Why the model year changes the test
Rogue diagnostics span S35, T32 and T33 generations with QR25DE, PR25DD, KR15DDT, hybrid and market-specific powertrains, while Rogue Sport is a separate model. EVAP routing, MAF strategy, catalyst layout, valve timing and CVT hardware are not interchangeable. Confirm VIN, production model, engine, drivetrain, CVT code and calibration before applying a test or bulletin.
- S35, T32 and T33 canister placement and harness routing differ.
- P0448 is a circuit code even though the vent valve also affects leak testing.
- P0456/P0455 companions require pressure or smoke testing after circuit repair.
- Rogue Sport and Rogue Hybrid require exact model identification.
P0448 FAQ
Does P0448 mean an EVAP leak?+
It is primarily a vent-control circuit code, though the same valve can also create a sealing fault.
Can I drive?+
Usually briefly without odor or wet fuel.
Is it always the vent valve?+
No. Wiring, connectors and the ECM driver can cause the circuit result.
Can dirt make the valve stick?+
Yes, but electrical testing is still required for P0448.
Can P0456 appear too?+
Yes. Test electrical operation and system sealing separately.
Can I use shop air?+
Not unregulated; EVAP components require limited pressure.
Does a software bulletin repair the valve?+
No. Some updates change permanent-code storage only after the underlying fault is repaired.
What confirms repair?+
Correct command/current/airflow and no pending P0448 after the monitor runs.
