P0455 Code Honda Odyssey: Large EVAP Leak and Cap Bulletin

Diagnose Odyssey P0455 with cap evidence, purge/vent sealing, FTP data and regulated smoke, including Honda's 2012–2013 cap branch.

WHAT P0455 MEANS

P0455 means the EVAP monitor could not build or hold expected pressure; it does not locate the opening. Record cap condition, fuel level, FTP data and recent tank work. Test purge and vent sealing, then use EVAP-safe smoke. Honda bulletin 14-010 lists all 2012–2013 Odysseys for a cap-gasket friction condition that may prevent sealing. Inspect and replace the cap only when that branch matches; valve, hose, canister, tank seal or pressure-sensor faults still need separate diagnosis.

DRIVING RISKService soon

Brief driving is usually acceptable without odor or visible gasoline. Park outdoors and stop for wet fuel, strong vapor smell or refueling spit-back. Never use unregulated shop air.

P0455 diagnostic path — each candidate cause paired with the test that separates it. The full cause matrix, with the evidence each cause needs, is below.

CAUSE MATRIX

What can set P0455—and how to separate it

The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.

Cap condition is perishable evidence

Record loose, cross-threaded or sticky feel before changing it.

Inspect the filler sealing surface too.

An open valve looks like a hole

Purge/vent paths must close during the monitor.

Prove mechanical sealing before blaming the tank.

The bulletin is narrow in time

Honda lists 2012–2013 Odyssey for the cap-gasket condition.

Other years still require normal diagnosis.

BEFORE CLEARING

Save these scan-data clues

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

  • Fuel level/soak/ambient
  • FTP data
  • Purge/vent commands
  • P0456/P0441 companions
  • Cap found state
  • Recent tank repair
TEST SEQUENCE

A practical diagnostic workflow

  1. 01
    Preserve cap evidence

    Do not tighten before recording.

  2. 02
    Apply 14-010 only to 2012–2013

    Match exact condition.

  3. 03
    Test valve sealing

    Clicking is not proof.

  4. 04
    Use regulated smoke

Inspect filler, hoses, canister and tank seals.

  5. 05
    Validate FTP

A biased sensor can fake a leak.

  6. 06
    Complete monitor

    Meet fuel/soak conditions.

!
Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace cap, purge valve and canister together. Bulletin 14-010 identifies one 2012–2013 cap condition, not every P0455 cause.

APPLICATION BOUNDARIES

Why the model year changes the test

Odyssey diagnostics span several J35 V6 generations, port and direct injection, VCM cylinder deactivation, conventional and newer EVAP hardware, plus six cylinder-specific misfire codes and two catalyst banks. Confirm VIN, model year, engine/calibration, emissions label and current Honda warranty/campaign status. Do not transfer four-cylinder Accord, Civic or CR-V VTEC bulletins to this J35-powered minivan.

  • 14-010 lists 2012–2013 Odyssey.
  • 1999–2004 P1456/P1457 logic differs.
  • Later EVAP layouts require year-correct diagrams.
  • Monitor completion depends on fuel and soak conditions.
COMMON QUESTIONS

P0455 FAQ

Always the cap?+

No; valves, hoses, tank seals and sensing can cause it.

Does 14-010 cover 2011?+

No; Odyssey coverage is 2012–2013.

Can I drive?+

Usually briefly without odor/wet fuel.

Can purge cause hard start?+

Yes after refueling.

Can I use shop air?+

Not unregulated.

Why new cap failed?+

Another leak/valve or filler damage remains.

Why readiness incomplete?+

Fuel, soak and temperature gate it.

What confirms repair?+

Correct sealing/FTP and completed monitor.
