P0420 means the PCM judged Bank 1 catalyst oxygen storage below threshold; it does not say why. Save P0430, P0300–P0306 and P219A/P219B companions, bank trims, misfire counters and readiness. Certain 2018–2019 Odysseys were included in Honda's injector warranty extension because injector wear or clogging could produce catalyst, misfire and bank-imbalance codes. Check VIN and current status; an isolated P0420 or another model year does not automatically qualify. Repair misfire, injector imbalance, oil consumption or exhaust leakage before judging the converter.
Match the symptom
Select the closest observation. The result changes the first test; it does not name a part to replace.
Preserve readiness and prerequisite data.
Before authorizing a catalytic converter
Ask the shop to document three things: the companion-code status, exhaust integrity, and the evidence that Bank 1 sensor behavior fails the VIN-correct catalyst test. A quotation that begins only with 'P0420 means converter' skips the root-cause work that protects the replacement. Review misfire history, fuel trims, oil use and coolant loss before approving an expensive part.
Confirm the proposed converter matches the truck's model year, engine, wheelbase/exhaust configuration and underhood emissions certification. Federal and California-emissions applications may not use the same part. Ask whether new seals, fasteners or sensors are required, what warranty applies, and whether the estimate includes correcting the condition that damaged the original unit.
After repair, verify there are no leaks, rising misfire counts or abnormal trims. Complete the applicable Ford drive cycle so the catalyst monitor can run. A permanent P0420 cannot simply be erased; it clears after the OBD system observes enough passing operation. Keep the invoice and part certification for future emissions inspection or warranty questions.
What can set P0420—and how to separate it
The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.
| Possible cause | Evidence that supports it | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Bank 1 catalyst deterioration | Prerequisites pass and Honda evaluation fails | Bank-specific catalyst test |
| Injector imbalance in eligible 2018–2019 vehicle | VIN/status and code pattern match | Honda program workflow |
| Misfire/rich operation | P030x history, rich trims or fouled plugs | Repair combustion fault |
| Oil/coolant contamination | Consumption, smoke or deposits | Mechanical/cooling diagnosis |
| Bank 1 exhaust leak or sensor fault | Soot/tick or failed response/circuit test | Leak then sensor test |
Bank comparison reduces guessing
Both banks share fuel and ambient conditions, so a bank split localizes injector, intake, exhaust or catalyst problems.
Confirm bank layout before using that comparison.
The injector notice is conditional
Honda lists specific years, VIN eligibility and code families.
It is not evidence that every P0420 needs six injectors.
Catalysts remember earlier faults
Misfire, oil ash and rich injection can cause lasting damage after the engine feels normal.
Review permanent codes and repair history.
Save these scan-data clues
Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

A practical diagnostic workflow
- 01Save all code context
Injector-program relevance depends on the combination and VIN.
- 02Identify Bank 1
Use the exact J35 diagram, not a generic front/rear guess.
- 03Correct catalyst killers
Repair injector, misfire, oil/coolant and mixture causes first.
- 04Inspect exhaust cold
Check Bank 1 flanges and bungs for soot/leaks.
- 05Compare both banks
Evaluate sensors and catalyst under the same conditions.
- 06Verify program and monitor
Check VIN status, then complete catalyst readiness after repair.
Do not replace the rear sensor or catalyst from one graph. The 2018–2019 injector extension is VIN- and diagnosis-dependent; it does not promise coverage for every P0420.
Why the model year changes the test
Odyssey diagnostics span several J35 V6 generations, port and direct injection, VCM cylinder deactivation, conventional and newer EVAP hardware, plus six cylinder-specific misfire codes and two catalyst banks. Confirm VIN, model year, engine/calibration, emissions label and current Honda warranty/campaign status. Do not transfer four-cylinder Accord, Civic or CR-V VTEC bulletins to this J35-powered minivan.
- Certain 2018–2019 Odysseys are named in Honda's injector extension notice.
- P0420 is Bank 1; P0430 is Bank 2.
- Older VCM oil-use/misfire history can be upstream catalyst evidence.
- Direct-injection testing requires specified pressure safety.
P0420 FAQ
Does P0420 prove the converter failed?+
No; injector, misfire, mixture, contamination, leak and sensor causes come first.
Which side is Bank 1?+
Use the exact model-year J35 service diagram.
Can I drive?+
Usually briefly with a steady lamp; stop for flashing, odor, rattle or power loss.
Does the injector extension cover every Odyssey?+
No; it names certain 2018–2019 VINs and requires diagnosis.
Will an O2 sensor fix it?+
Only if testing proves that circuit/sensor faulty.
Can oil use cause it?+
Yes, oil ash can poison catalyst material.
Why compare banks?+
The other bank is a same-engine reference.
What confirms repair?+
Healthy prerequisites and completed monitor without pending P0420.
