Minivan packaging changes the inspection route
Vapor plumbing runs from the engine bay toward a large rear fuel tank and canister area. Follow it end to end for rubbed tubing, displaced clips and quick-connects disturbed during exhaust, tank or rear-heater work.
Do not assume the newest diagram fits an earlier 3.8L van. Use VIN and engine information to identify the purge valve, leak-detection device and service ports before smoke testing.
A tiny leak needs controlled conditions
Record fuel level, soak temperature and whether the lamp followed refueling. Small-leak monitors are gated by conditions, so clearing the code before saving freeze frame can make an intermittent leak much harder to reproduce.
Test the filler seal and purge valve without first changing them. A purge valve that passes manifold vacuum while commanded closed can cause both P0456 and a rough or difficult hot restart after filling.
Smoke confirms location, not just existence
Use EVAP-rated equipment at the manufacturer’s limited pressure and isolate sections of the system. A faint plume at the cap, canister seam, hose connection or pump-module seal gives a repairable location.

Town & Country OBD-II coverage crosses several minivan generations, with 3.3L and 3.8L pushrod V6 engines in earlier vans and the 3.6L Pentastar in 2011–2016 RT models.
