P0300 Code Chrysler Town & Country: Pentastar Misfire Diagnosis

Diagnose Town & Country P0300 with cylinder patterns, plugs, coils, fuel and leakage tests plus exact factory bulletin boundaries.

WHAT P0300 MEANS

P0300 means several cylinders misfired or no single cylinder dominated. Preserve individual counters, trims, coolant temperature and load before moving coils. Earlier 3.3L/3.8L engines and the 3.6L Pentastar need different numbering and tests. Bulletin 09-002-14 covers specified 2011–2013 3.6L vans with P0300 or even-cylinder misfires and requires leakage testing; separate PCM bulletins cover defined 2012 and 2015–2016 3.6L applications. Verify the exact branch instead of assuming a head or software repair.

SAE/Ford description: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
DRIVING RISKStop soon

A flashing MIL means catalyst-damaging active misfire. Stop sustained driving. Stop also for raw fuel, severe shaking, overheating or mechanical noise.

P0300 diagnostic path — each candidate cause paired with the test that separates it. The full cause matrix, with the evidence each cause needs, is below.

CAUSE MATRIX

What can set P0300—and how to separate it

The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.

Possible causeEvidence that supports itFirst useful test
Worn/fouled plug or ignition faultCylinder leader and controlled swap followsLabelled plug/ignition test

Cylinder distribution is more valuable than the generic code

Capture individual-cylinder counts during the original cold start, idle or loaded event. One leader supports a targeted ignition, injector and compression path; even-cylinder concentration on an eligible early Pentastar raises the factory leakage-test branch.

If both banks participate, investigate shared fuel quality or pressure, charging voltage, purge leakage and major air-metering faults. Avoid rearranging multiple coils before the original pattern is recorded.

The X56 extension requires evidence

Bulletin 09-002-14 Rev. B names specified 2011–2013 RT 3.6L vans with P0300, P0302, P0304 or P0306. It directs leakage testing of cylinders 2, 4 and 6 and uses 25 percent or greater leakage in its decision path.

That is not permission to replace every Pentastar head. Normal leakage, different cylinders, a later model year or another engine returns the diagnosis to plugs, ignition, injectors, intake sealing, fuel delivery and mechanical tests.

Software branches are year-specific

Bulletin 18-104-15 lists P0300–P0306 for a defined 2012 RT 3.6L with DG2 transmission. Bulletin 18-085-16 identifies a cold-idle P0300 condition for 2015 vehicles within its 2015–2016 build scope.

Check VIN, build date, transmission and current PCM level before considering either update. A calibration cannot restore compression or repair a worn plug, and a flashing MIL still requires reducing load to protect the catalysts.

BEFORE CLEARING

Save these scan-data clues

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

  • Exact VIN, platform, model year and engine sales code
  • All confirmed, pending and permanent companion codes
  • RPM, load, coolant temperature and vehicle speed
  • Relevant commanded and actual scan data
  • Recent service, repairs and symptom conditions
  • Manufacturer bulletin and current software/VIN status
TEST SEQUENCE

A practical diagnostic workflow

  1. 01
    Identify engine and bank layout

    Cylinder patterns differ.

  2. 02
    Preserve counters

    Save cold/load evidence.

  3. 03
    Inspect plugs in order

    Deposits direct testing.

  4. 04
    Target ignition

    Use one controlled test.

  5. 05
    Test fuel and air

    Graph pressure/trims and smoke paths.

  6. 06
    Prove mechanical health

    Use compression/leak-down/timing.

  7. 07
    Verify original condition

    Avoid a flashing-MIL road test.

!
Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace the most commonly named component from P0300 alone. Confirm the exact engine, preserve evidence and complete the manufacturer test sequence before ordering parts.

APPLICATION BOUNDARIES

Why the model year changes the test

Town & Country OBD-II coverage crosses several minivan generations, with 3.3L and 3.8L pushrod V6 engines in earlier vans and the 3.6L Pentastar in 2011–2016 RT models. Cylinder numbering, catalyst banks, oil-pressure hardware, cam signals and EVAP routing change with that engine boundary. Decode the VIN, identify the engine and verify build date before using a bulletin or parts catalog.

  • 09-002-14 covers listed 2011–2013 RT 3.6L vehicles and specified code/leakage criteria.
  • 18-104-15 applies to a defined 2012 RT 3.6L/DG2 combination.
  • 18-085-16 includes a 2015 cold-idle P0300 branch through its stated 2016 build cutoff.
  • 3.3L and 3.8L vans do not inherit Pentastar bulletins.
COMMON QUESTIONS

P0300 FAQ

Does P0300 mean all coils failed?+

No.

Can I drive?+

Not with flashing MIL or strong shaking.

Can bad fuel cause it?+

Yes.

Should I replace plugs first?+

Inspect and record them first.

Can vacuum leaks cause it?+

Yes.

Can timing cause it?+

Yes, especially with cam/crank codes.

Why save counters?+

They reveal cylinder and bank structure.

What confirms repair?+

Stable counters under original conditions.
