P0299 means actual boost stayed below the requested value, but the Jetta repair depends on engine code. VW's 2008–2015 CCTA/CBFA 2.0 TSI tip identifies a wastegate roll pin that can back out and let the lever drop or seize. VW's 2009 CBEA and 2010–2014 CJAA TDI bulletin follows vacuum, actuator and variable-turbine checks. Other 1.4T, 1.5T, 1.8T and 2.0T engines need their own erWin procedure. Engine code selects the diagnostic tree

Read the build label or scan identification. A gasoline wastegate lever problem and a diesel VNT vacuum-control fault can set the same generic code but share little hardware.

Preserve freeze frame and graph charge-pressure specified versus actual with actuator command. A single unloaded rev is not a valid boost test.

Inspect the exact known branch

On listed CCTA/CBFA engines, inspect the wastegate roll pin and roughly 3 mm lever clearance exactly as VW directs. Do not generalize that check to another turbo.

On CBEA/CJAA TDI, test vacuum supply, hoses, actuator movement and turbine mechanism through the bulletin before condemning the turbocharger.

Prove charge-air integrity under pressure

For every engine, inspect compressor inlet, intercooler, clamps, diverter/control hardware and charge pipes. A split can open only under load.

After repair, repeat the same safe loaded graph and confirm actual boost tracks request without pending P0299 or overshoot.

Jetta diagnostics span several generations and 2.0 MPI, 2.5 inline-five, 1.4T, 1.5T, 1.8T, 2.0T and TDI powertrains. The same DTC can lead to a different test on a CCTA, CBFA, CJAA, CVCA or DNKA engine. Read the underhood engine code and VIN before applying a bulletin, measuring block or component location.
