WHAT P0128 MEANS

P0128 means Sorento coolant temperature rose too slowly or stayed below the ECM's modeled regulating range. A stuck-open thermostat is common, but low coolant, trapped air, biased ECT, excessive fan operation and hybrid engine-off time can imitate it. After a full soak, compare ECT and intake-air temperature to ambient, then graph ECT, load, speed, heater use and fan command on a safe drive. Match thermostat and bleeding procedure to the exact engine.

The cold comparison tests the sensor first

After an overnight soak, ECT and intake-air temperature should be reasonably close to ambient. A large pre-start disagreement cannot be caused by an open thermostat.

Inspect coolant level only when cold and note contamination or leakage. Low coolant can uncover the sensor and produce misleading readings.

Graph warm-up under known load

Record speed, engine load, heater use and fan command with temperature. A smooth rise followed by a low plateau supports thermostat leakage more than an erratic sensor trace.

Hybrid models need sufficient commanded engine-on operation for a valid comparison; do not judge them against a conventional idle-only pattern.

Verify regulation after repair

Use the VIN-correct thermostat, seals, fill and air-bleed process. An incorrect opening temperature can reproduce P0128 without visible leakage.

Confirm stable cabin heat, no leaks and a completed warm-up monitor without pending P0128.
