WHAT P0128 MEANS

P0128 means the Elantra coolant temperature did not rise or regulate as the ECM expected. A leaking-open thermostat is common, but low coolant, trapped air, biased ECT data, unintended fan operation or an incorrect thermostat can imitate it. Compare ECT and intake-air temperature after a long soak, inspect coolant only when cold, then graph temperature, road speed, engine load and fan command. Hybrid and turbo cooling strategies need their own service mode and bleed procedure.

Cold-soak data tests the sensors before the thermostat

After an overnight soak, ECT and intake-air temperature should approach ambient. A large mismatch exists before coolant circulation begins and raises sensor or circuit priority.

Check reservoir/radiator level only by the manual's cold procedure and inspect recent cooling work for trapped air or leakage.

Graph temperature against speed and fan command

A thermostat leaking open may warm slowly in town and let temperature fall during highway airflow. Record speed, load, cabin heat and ambient conditions.

Verify commanded versus actual fan operation. A relay or control fault that runs fans cold can produce the same slow warm-up pattern.

Install the engine-correct part and verify regulation

Elantra engine families do not share thermostat ratings or fill procedures. Identify VIN and engine before draining coolant.

Confirm stable temperature and heater performance under comparable conditions and no pending P0128. A cleared code immediately after installation proves nothing.
