WHAT P0014 MEANS

P0014 means the Elantra's exhaust cam remained more advanced than commanded or failed CVVT performance. Identify the Beta, Gamma, Nu, Smartstream or N powertrain; save desired/actual exhaust angle, oil temperature and P0017 companions; verify oil, filter and pressure; then test the exhaust oil-control valve, circuit and cam response. On an inline-four, Bank 1 is the only bank and Sensor B is the exhaust cam. Do not replace a sensor, solenoid or timing chain until waveform and command evidence separates them.

Start with exhaust desired versus actual angle

Record both cam positions at idle, during GDS actuation and near the freeze-frame condition. An exhaust-only error narrows the OCV, passage, phaser, sensor and indexing branches.

If intake and exhaust codes occur together, inspect shared oil supply, pressure, voltage and base timing before assuming two valves failed.

Test the OCV circuit and hydraulic result separately

Load-test power, control and terminal fit, measure current, then confirm the exhaust cam moves and returns. A clicking valve can remain hydraulically restricted.

Inspect the oil and approved screens/passages for contamination. Correct the cause of sludge or low pressure rather than merely cleaning evidence away.

Use P0017 and waveform phase to choose repair depth

Missing or noisy sensor edges favor circuit diagnosis. Clean signals with a fixed crank-to-exhaust-cam offset and timing noise support phaser, indexing or chain inspection.

Perform any required learning after repair and verify commanded tracking hot and cold with no pending P0014.
