WHAT 2A87 MEANS

BMW 2A87 means the exhaust cam was late or failed to reach its commanded VANOS position. On an applicable E70 N52K, BMW's SIB directs oil-supply and ISTA test-plan checks; it does not authorize replacing both solenoids. Identify the engine, verify oil/filter/pressure, compare exhaust target and actual angle, test the correct circuit and follow the exact adjuster, passage and hook-ring-seal tests. N55, V8 and diesel X5 engines need their own fault map.

Why the model year changes the test

The X5 badge spans E53, E70, F15 and G05 generations with naturally aspirated six-cylinder, turbocharged six-cylinder, V8, diesel and plug-in-hybrid engines. Four-digit BMW faults belong to specific DME generations: an E70 N52, E70/F15 N55, V8 and diesel do not share the same VANOS, boost, fuel or cylinder logic. Decode VIN and read engine/DME identification plus complete ISTA fault text before selecting a test.

  • 2A87 is the exhaust branch; 2A82 is intake.
  • E70 N52K factory guidance cannot be applied blindly to F15/G05 or V8/diesel engines.
  • Hot-only reduced power should be captured with data.
  • Persistent rattle or unsafe oil pressure raises urgency.

No. Oil supply, wiring, passages, phaser, chain and feedback faults can produce it.

Should I replace cam sensors?+

Not without waveform or circuit evidence.

It can show that the exhaust cam is no longer correctly correlated with the crankshaft.

No. A stable measured offset and mechanical checks must support that conclusion.
