WHAT P0456 MEANS

P0456 means the gasoline A4 EVAP system failed a very-small-leak test; it does not prove the cap. Preserve fuel level and refueling history, inspect the cap/filler, test the N80 purge valve and leak-detection/vent hardware, then use EVAP-regulated smoke to section the longitudinal-platform vapor lines, canister and tank seals. B7, B8/B8.5 and B9 routing differs, and TDI applicability must be verified.

A cap cannot repair a leaking N80 valve, cracked line, canister or top-of-tank seal.

Verify valve sealing

Command purge and leak-detection components and observe tank-pressure response. Electrical operation does not prove a closed valve is gas-tight.

Use regulated EVAP smoke and section long vapor paths. Never apply unrestricted shop air.

Complete the natural test

Meet the specified fuel-level and soak conditions without topping off, which can saturate the canister.

A completed monitor with no pending P0456 confirms repair more reliably than code clearing.

Why the model year changes the test

Audi A4 diagnostics cross longitudinal B6, B7, B8/B8.5, B9 and newer platforms with naturally aspirated, TFSI and market-specific TDI engines. Longitudinal packaging does not make a transverse VW procedure interchangeable. Confirm VIN, model year, engine code, emissions configuration, transmission and current software before using a component map or bulletin.
