WHAT P0301 MEANS

P0301 means the A4 ECM attributed misfire to cylinder 1; it does not automatically condemn coil 1. Confirm cylinder 1 for the installed inline-four or V6, preserve counters and freeze frame, inspect the plug and move one ignition component only. If the miss stays, test injector contribution, local intake leakage, compression and leak-down. A TDI uses diesel injection and compression diagnosis rather than spark components.

Keep cylinder evidence labeled

On TFSI engines, compare plug evidence, injector contribution and low/high fuel pressure. On TDI engines, evaluate correction, delivery and compression without searching for an ignition coil.

Cold and loaded symptoms must be reproduced safely; a flashing gasoline MIL risks catalyst damage.

Why the model year changes the test

Audi A4 diagnostics cross longitudinal B6, B7, B8/B8.5, B9 and newer platforms with naturally aspirated, TFSI and market-specific TDI engines. Longitudinal packaging does not make a transverse VW procedure interchangeable. Confirm VIN, model year, engine code, emissions configuration, transmission and current software before using a component map or bulletin.
