Manifold vacuum versus ported vacuum

Manifold vacuum is strong below the closed throttle plate at warm idle and falls as the throttle opens. Ported vacuum is taken near the throttle edge and is low or absent at the specified idle position, then rises as the throttle opens. Distributor and EGR control circuits may combine these signals through switches and modulators.

Test a questionable source with a gauge and the exact warm-idle conditions. Nipple position alone is not proof after a carburetor has been replaced or modified.

Distributor advance branch

The distributor vacuum diaphragm changes ignition timing according to the calibrated source. Some 22R systems route the source through thermal or switching valves. Connecting directly to manifold vacuum may produce a large idle-timing change; connecting to the wrong port may remove cruise advance.

Set base timing only with the specified connector or hose state and idle speed. Then reconnect the system and confirm that advance changes smoothly without a leaking diaphragm.

EGR and temperature-switching branch

The EGR valve is not normally given raw manifold vacuum at all times. A modulator and ported signal meter operation, while coolant-temperature switching can inhibit EGR during warm-up. California and federal diagrams can assign different ports and valves.

A crossed TVSV/BVSV hose may look harmless but reverse when a circuit is enabled. Preserve port letters and the factory schematic rather than using switch color alone.

Canister, PCV and air-cleaner branches

The charcoal canister stores fuel vapor and purges it under calibrated conditions. The PCV valve meters crankcase vapor continuously under manifold vacuum, with filtered makeup air entering elsewhere. These systems are related to intake flow but should not be combined into an improvised tee.

The thermostatic air-cleaner motor uses vacuum to select heated or cool intake air during warm-up. Its small hoses and thermal sensor belong to the air-cleaner control branch, not the distributor or EGR branch.

  • Use vacuum-rated hose; fuel vapor and heat resistance matter near carburetor and EGR parts.
  • Match inside diameter so tees and calibrated restrictors seal correctly.
