Do not mix metric PS/CV with U.S. mechanical horsepower or copy a global-market figure into a U.S. table. Match model year, market, body designation, drivetrain and trim, then preserve BMW's own rating standard and fuel qualifier when comparing generations.
The U.S. generation progression
The U.S. M3 moved from the E30's 192-hp four-cylinder to a 240-hp E36 inline-six, then to the 333-hp E46. The E9x changed direction with a 414-hp naturally aspirated V8, while the F8x returned to six cylinders with turbocharging and a 425-hp launch rating.
For 2025, BMW separates three G80 outputs: 473 hp for the rear-drive manual M3, 503 hp for M3 Competition and 523 hp for Competition xDrive. The range is trim- and drivetrain-specific, not evidence that every G80 has been uprated to 523 hp.
Keep U.S., European and special-edition figures apart
BMW sold materially different E30 and E36 calibrations across markets. European historical charts often show 200–238 hp E30 variants and 286- or 321-hp E36 models, while the U.S. generation figures are 192 and 240 hp. Both can be correct for their market.
Special editions further complicate a simple generation table: Competition Package, CS and limited models can exceed the standard car. Record model year, market, body/chassis and full trim before quoting output, and preserve whether the source uses hp, PS or kW rather than silently converting labels.
