WHAT P0441 MEANS

P0441 means the ECM's commanded purge test did not produce the expected tank-pressure response. The fault can be too little purge, purge when none was commanded, a leak that prevents vacuum from developing, a blocked vent path or misleading pressure-sensor data. Start by saving related P0455/P0456/P0446 codes and fuel level, then test the purge valve for sealing and commanded flow, inspect the cap and hoses, and use a low-pressure smoke test with bidirectional valve control. Toyota EG048-04 supplies an older LEV II monitor supplement that includes the 2004 Highlander; it should not be treated as the plumbing diagram for every generation.

Purge flow and system sealing overlap

The ECM expects a pressure change when purge is commanded. A large leak can make a good purge valve look ineffective because the system cannot hold vacuum.

Conversely, a purge valve that leaks while closed can disturb idle without creating an obvious external smoke outlet. Test command state and sealing separately.

A cap inspection is evidence, not a verdict

Look for a hardened, cut or folded seal and corrosion or damage at the filler neck. Preserve the original cap position if the code followed refueling.

A new cap cannot repair a cracked hose, blocked vent or biased pressure sensor. Confirm the entire system response after any cap repair.

Use the correct generation diagram

EG048-04 is valuable for understanding the listed 2004 LEV II system, but Highlander hardware evolved across generations.

Trace hoses and valve locations using the VIN-correct Toyota information instead of forcing an older schematic onto a newer vehicle.

Highlander diagnostics span the first-generation 2.4L 2AZ-FE and 3.0L/3.3L MZ engines, later 2.7L 1AR-FE and 3.5L 2GR-family V6 engines, several hybrid systems, the 2020+ 2.5L A25A four-cylinder hybrid, and newer 2.4L turbo applications.
