Intermittent missing edges support a circuit problem; a stable offset, startup rattle or failed phaser response supports mechanical timing, oil-control, reluctor or phaser inspection. Replacing both sensors is not a diagnosis.

A quiet idle alone is not enough. Recheck cold start, pending codes and freeze-frame conditions, while avoiding aggressive operation until oil pressure and cam response are stable. Correlation is a relationship, not a component name

Both sensors may generate signals while their timing relationship is wrong, or one valid mechanical system may be falsely accused by an intermittent signal dropout. Save synchronized cam and crank data before deciding which branch applies.

Compare desired and actual cam angle where scan data supports it. A phaser that lags command only under hot-oil conditions presents differently from a harness dropout that removes individual waveform edges.

Oil quality is part of variable-cam operation

Check level, viscosity, filter and sludge history before commanding phasers. Low oil, incorrect viscosity or a restricted control passage can delay movement and create correlation errors without a stretched chain.

Do not mask noise with thicker oil. Correct the service prerequisite and use the engine-specific actuation test; stop if mechanical pressure or valvetrain noise indicates unsafe operation.

A stable offset justifies mechanical inspection

Clean cam and crank patterns that remain displaced point toward chain indexing, guide or tensioner wear, phaser position or a moved reluctor. Compare with a known-good pattern for that exact engine and model year.
