WHAT 2A82 MEANS

BMW 2A82 means the intake cam did not reach its VANOS target. BMW SIB 11 02 08 includes defined E83 N52K X3 vehicles, while F25 N20/N55 generally uses newer VANOS fault text and different hardware. Verify VIN/engine, oil/filter/pressure, compare target with actual intake angle and test the proper solenoid/circuit. Certain 2010–2011 X3 applications were named in recall 14V-176; VIN status and the current ISTA plan control.

Identify chassis and engine

Read VIN and DME identification and full ISTA text. Do not apply an E83 four-digit fault blindly to an F25/G01.

Save target/actual angle, oil temperature and companion faults before clearing.

Verify hydraulic response

Confirm oil, filter/cap and mechanical pressure, then command intake VANOS and load-test wiring.

Separate a slow response from a fixed correlation offset before opening the timing drive.

Check recall and mechanical evidence

Use VIN lookup for recall status and follow engine-specific bolt, passage, adjuster and sealing-ring tests.

Verify repeated hot response without 2A82.

Why the model year changes the test

BMW X3 diagnostics span E83, F25 and G01 generations with N52 naturally aspirated six-cylinder, N20 four-cylinder turbo, N55 six-cylinder turbo, diesel and newer B-series engines. A four-digit E-series fault may not be the native code on a later DME. Confirm VIN, chassis, engine designation, production date and complete ISTA fault text before choosing VANOS, boost, fuel or cylinder tests.

  • E83 N52K and F25 N20/N55 systems differ.
  • Recall 14V-176 names certain 2010–2011 X3 vehicles; verify VIN.

Does the code prove the oil-control valve failed?+

No. Oil supply, wiring, passages, phaser, chain and feedback faults can produce it.

Can low oil cause it?+

Yes. CVVT depends on controlled engine-oil flow.

Can I drive?+

Limit driving and stop for rattle, oil warning, stalling or severe running problems.

Should I replace cam sensors?+

Not without waveform or circuit evidence.

Why check P0017?+

It can show that the exhaust cam is no longer correctly correlated with the crankshaft.

Does it prove the chain stretched?+

No. A stable measured offset and mechanical checks must support that conclusion.

Can cleaning the solenoid fix it?+

Only when contamination is confirmed and the approved service method permits it; the oil-system cause still matters.

What confirms repair?+

Desired and actual cam timing track correctly with no pending DTC.
