P0300 means multiple 328i cylinders misfired or no cylinder dominated. Preserve BMW 29CC/29D0-series companions, smooth-running values, temperature, load and fuel pressure. N51/N52 and N20/N26 use different fuel and air systems, so identify the engine first. Label plugs and coils, make controlled comparisons, test crankcase/intake leakage and fuel delivery, then prove compression and VANOS/timing if the counts remain.

Why the model year changes the test

The 328i badge covers very different powertrains. North American E9x cars generally use naturally aspirated N51/N52 six-cylinder engines, while F30/F31 cars use turbocharged N20/N26 four-cylinder engines; other markets and swaps vary. Read VIN, chassis, engine designation, DME identification and the complete BMW fault text before using any test. A four-digit BMW fault is not safely interchangeable with a generic P-code or a fault from a 335i.

  • N51/N52 has six cylinders; N20/N26 has four.
  • F30 direct-injection fuel work requires high-pressure safety and injector calibration procedures.
  • A flashing MIL means stop loading the catalysts.
