Toyota specifies a high-strength aramid-core belt for the compressor/generator drive. Rotate each automatic tensioner clockwise to unload it. During installation, place the first belt on every pulley except the water pump before slipping it over that pulley; place the vane-pump belt on every pulley except its tensioner before completing the route.
Trace the two routes before loosening either tensioner
The main high-strength belt begins at the crankshaft and runs through the cooler compressor, water pump and generator with an automatic tensioner controlling the span. Toyota's routing figure shows the ribbed and back-side contacts; preserve that orientation because a smooth pulley should not be forced into a grooved-side route.
A second, shorter belt drives the vane pump from the crankshaft and includes an idler plus its own automatic tensioner. Label the two old belts before removal and compare length, rib count and construction with the replacements. The main compressor/generator belt requires the specified high-strength aramid-core construction.
Installation checkpoints that prevent immediate belt damage
For the compressor/generator belt, route every pulley except the water pump, rotate the tensioner clockwise and slip the final span over the water-pump pulley. For the vane-pump belt, route every pulley except its tensioner, rotate that tensioner clockwise and complete the route there.
Inspect from above and through the right wheel opening to confirm every rib is seated, with special attention to the crankshaft pulley. Reinstall the apron seal, opening pad, under-cover hardware and wheel by the full procedure; Toyota lists 103 N·m (76 lb-ft) for the wheel nuts. Start only after tools are clear, then observe tracking briefly and shut down immediately if an edge walks off a pulley.
