The Subaru EZ30 uses separate right- and left-bank timing chains connected through a central idler-sprocket system rather than one continuous chain around all four cams. On the cited later EZ30 procedure, prepare the cams with the exhaust-sprocket key grooves at 12 o'clock, initially place the crank sprocket Top mark at 9 o'clock, then turn the crank clockwise until Top is at 12 o'clock—No. 1 TDC—and do not rotate the crank or cams after that until routing is complete. The EZ30's very short front-to-back dimensions come from a compact chain drive built around central idler sprockets. From the front, the chain paths overlap visually, which is why photos often look like one complicated loop. Subaru's parts drawing instead identifies a right chain, a left chain, upper and lower idlers, the water pump and separate tensioning hardware for each bank.
There are also two broad EZ30 service families. Early 2001-2003 engines use fixed cam-sprocket hardware. The later engine used in fourth-generation Legacy/Outback and Tribeca adds cam-control and variable-lift hardware around the same general dual-chain concept. A later colored-link illustration should not be pasted onto an early engine without checking the sprockets and manual.

The factory procedure uses gold and dark-blue identification links in the cited chain set, but replacement-chain colors can vary. Mechanical proof comes from the labeled crank, idler and cam-sprocket marks in the exact year manual. Each bank has its own guide, lever and hydraulic tensioner, and the later procedure requires all marks to be checked before the tensioner stopper pins are withdrawn.
How to use this specification correctly

Confirm VIN, model year and engine family. Separate early EZ30D from later cam-control versions and exclude EZ36 before ordering chains, guides, tensioners or sprockets.

Record cam/crank correlation codes, oil pressure/noise conditions and scan data before disassembly. Chain noise can also involve a tensioner, guide, water pump or oil-supply problem.

Remove the engine/front accessories and chain cover by the exact Subaru procedure. Sort the several cover-bolt lengths and sealing washers so they return to their documented positions.

Compress each bank tensioner on a non-slip rubber surface using the factory method and insert a thin stopper pin. Do not allow the plunger to come out or mix worn RH/LH components.

For the cited later procedure, use the crankshaft service socket to place the crank sprocket Top mark at 9 o'clock and set each exhaust cam-sprocket key groove at 12 o'clock; align the intake cam sprockets to their illustrated preparation positions.

Turn the crank sprocket clockwise until its Top mark reaches 12 o'clock, placing No. 1 piston at TDC. From this point, do not independently rotate the crank or cam sprockets until both chain routes are complete.

Install the lower idler and LH chain first. Match the chain identification link to the crank mark, then route over the lower idler, water pump, LH exhaust cam and LH intake cam while matching each fixed sprocket mark.

Install the upper idler and LH guide, lever and tensioner. Preserve the lower-idler references that will be used by the RH chain; do not pull the LH tensioner pin yet.

Match the RH-chain references to the LH/RH positions on the lower idler, route the RH chain over its intake and exhaust sprockets, then install its guides, lever, tensioner and center guide to the exact clearance/procedure.

Confirm every crank, idler and cam mark against its identification link before withdrawing either tensioner pin. Lubricate specified contact surfaces, rotate the engine by hand as directed, recheck mechanical timing and seal the covers using Subaru's exact bead paths and bolt sequence.
How the two chains share crank timing
The LH chain receives the crank reference and runs through the lower idler, water pump and LH cams. The RH chain is indexed to the bank-specific positions on the shared lower-idler system and then drives the RH cams. A lower-idler mistake therefore changes the relationship between banks even if all four cam links look locally aligned.
Mark RH and LH chains, guides, tensioner levers and idler orientation during removal. Subaru advises returning reusable components to their original positions so established wear faces are not reversed.
The Top mark is not the keyway
The later Subaru procedure explicitly calls the stamped crank-sprocket reference the Top mark. It first moves that mark to 9 o'clock while the cam sprockets are prepared, then rotates clockwise to 12 o'clock for No. 1 TDC.
Do not substitute crank keyway direction for the labeled Top mark. The service drawing, crank sprocket stamp and special-tool viewing orientation must agree before chain installation begins.
Early EZ30D versus later EZ30
Both manuals show two bank chains, central idlers, a chain-driven water pump and individual bank tensioners. The later manual also shows oil-flow and oil-switching controls associated with the revised valvetrain and uses its own cam-sprocket setup angles and marks.
Identify the physical cylinder heads and sprockets on swap engines. Model badges such as '3.0R' help, but casting, part number, cam-control hardware and the VIN-linked manual are stronger evidence.
Colored links and tensioner release
The cited later manual labels gold links at cam references and dark-blue references elsewhere in the chain/idler setup. Colors are useful during first assembly but can differ on replacement chains and will not immediately repeat after hand rotation.
Keep both tensioners pinned until all crank, idler and cam references are simultaneously correct. Once released, verify the plungers extend against the proper levers and the chains remain seated on every sprocket tooth.
