Confirm whether the cam is flat-tappet or roller, whether a thrust plate/tensioner has been added and whether the timing set has multiple crank keyways. An aftermarket advance/retard keyway must be selected by its own instructions, not by assuming every visible dot is the zero position.
Why both sprockets install together
With the chain already engaged and the sprockets separated to remove slack, their tooth relationship is fixed before either reaches the shaft. Sliding both on evenly prevents the chain from forcing one shaft out of position.
The factory procedure also calls for a cam-support tool at the rear side of the cam gear. Hammering or drawing the sprocket on without controlling rearward cam movement can damage the rear plug or upset endplay hardware.
Dot-to-dot and distributor position
With the two marks adjacent, the cam is phased correctly to the crank but cylinder 6 is in its firing position. Cylinder 1 is at top dead center on overlap. Installing the distributor as though #1 were ready can produce a no-start or backfire commonly described as being 180 degrees out.
Rotate the crank exactly one revolution; the crank returns to TDC while the cam turns half a revolution, putting cylinder 1 on compression. Confirm both #1 valves are closed before choosing the #1 cap terminal.
Chain wear and verification
A worn silent chain can retard cam timing and make ignition marks unstable. The archived Chrysler procedure includes a valve-lift timing check and directs inspection of sprocket index marks, chain wear and the damper TDC mark when results are outside range.
