Registration and coding solve different problems
Registration tells the energy-management system that a new battery has been fitted and records the replacement. It lets the charging strategy stop treating the battery as an aged unit.
Coding changes the vehicle's configured battery class when capacity or chemistry changes. A like-for-like replacement normally still requires registration, while a deliberate AGM/lead-acid or amp-hour change may require both coding and registration.
Identify multi-battery and high-voltage systems first
Later 7 Series vehicles may carry an auxiliary battery, 48-volt system or high-voltage hybrid battery in addition to the conventional 12-volt battery. Each has a separate isolation and replacement procedure.
Read the existing labels and VIN equipment before disconnecting power. Do not bridge, charge or substitute across voltage systems, and use BMW's approved diagnostic/service functions after installation.
